Today is "Mailer Monday"! 📬
Over the next couple of weeks, we'll be taking a look at all the mailers that the current congressman has put out over the last several years. The question becomes, have any of these promises ever come to fruition? Or is it just lip service for the campaign trail? We're certain that by the time we've gone through the slew of mail pieces that have been sent out, constituents will see it has always been nothing more than pandering for votes during election season.
First up, a mailer from 2016! (That's from a lot longer ago than term limits would allow for someone to be in Congress 😳). But that's just one of the bullets:
- A balanced budget sounds nice to conservative voters but voting for trillion-dollar pork bills and wasteful spending time after time is quite contrary.
- Pay has still not been cut for members of Congress; in fact, in one of the hasty continuing resolutions rushed through last fall that the sitting congressman supported, it actually included a raise! He attempted to say this wasn't true because it required votes in appropriations in order to make it happen. Common sense tells us actions speak louder than words! - We also know Congress compromised the 72-hour rule before taking a vote with this latest spending bill. Further, Congress still isn't subject to the Freedom of Information Act. Again, it sounds good in theory to put on a mailer, but it's just another undelivered talking point.
- Lastly, members of Congress can still become lobbyists just one short year after leaving office. This is where we most obviously see the revolving door at play.
Accountability is important. The best way for citizens to hold their elected representatives accountable is at the ballot box. I am humbly asking for your vote on May 14th. I will never say one thing on the campaign trail and change my tune in the halls of Congress.
Remember, Don hasn't changed DC. DC has changed Don.
